LIST OF ROLES and AUDITION SIDES:
Hamlet – A prince struggling with grief after the death of his father King Hamlet. A university student, charming, funny, does not suffer fools gladly. A fine actor(convinces his entire family and the Danish Court. That he has lost his marbles). Intelligent, introspective, questions….. everything.
Claudius – Hamlet’s uncle, now King, and loving husband to his brother’s widow. Devious, dangerous, can be charming when he needs to be.
Polonius – Chamberlain to the King. Well meaning, if overbearing father to Laertes and Ophelia. Loquacious, rather too pleased with his importance, and his opinions.
Horatio – Hamlet’s university friend. Loyal and dependable, with a wicked sense of humor.
Laertes – Polonius’ son, university student, foil to Hamlet: artless, blunt, impulsive, willing to burn the world down for revenge.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern – Hamlet’s childhood friends. Two ‘yes men’ Hamlet describes as ‘tedious’. They are gormless, humorless, gullible, not evil, but prefer to let those in power do their thinking for them.
Osric – A young noble from the countryside, unaccustomed to courtly etiquette. An object of ridicule for Hamlet and Horatio. (Doubles as Bernado)
Player King – Principal actor of the Tragedians of the City. Plays Gonzago in The Murder of Gonzago. Dignified, a strong prescence, ability to cry real tears a plus. (Doubles as a member of the court) (Doubles as Gravedigger)
Player Queen – Leading lady of the Tragedians of the City. Plays Baptista in The Murder of Gonzago. (Doubles as a member of the court)
Player – Younger member of the Tragedians of the City. Plays Lucianus and Prologue in The Murder of Gonzago. (also doubles as a member of the court) (Doubles as second Clown).
Queen Gertrude – Hamlet’s mother, married to her late husband’s brother, Claudius. Adept at navigating her position as a woman surrounded by powerful men; but set in her ways and unwilling to rock the boat.
Ophelia – Polonius’ daughter, courted by Hamlet. She is loving, empathetic, fragile. Deeply trusting of her father and her brother Laertes, perhaps to a fault.
First Clown (Gravedigger) – Lugubrious, dry sense of humor. Sings acapella.
Second Clown – Gravediggers assistant. A simple fellow.
